What to Expect at a VA Diabetes C&P Exam

Many veterans diagnosed with diabetes are surprised when the VA schedules a Compensation and Pension exam related to the condition. But the purpose of the exam is not treatment. Instead, the examiner documents medical findings that help the VA evaluate diabetes under the VA rating schedule. Today we’re breaking down what happens during a VA C&P exam for Diabetes Mellitus Type I and Type II, including some of the questions the examiner may ask. When a veteran files a claim involving diabetes, the VA may schedule a Compensation and Pension examination. The purpose of this exam is to gather medical information about the condition. The examiner reviews medical history and documents findings that help the VA apply the rating criteria found in 38 CFR §4.119 Diagnostic Code 7913. This rating criteria considers factors such as treatment requirements, medical management, and how the condition affects daily functioning.
