What Is an Intent to File? (VA Standard Explained)

Category:

An Intent to File notifies the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that you plan to submit a claim and protects your effective date under 38 CFR Part 3. If granted, benefits may be paid back to that date. You have one year to file the full claim, but service connection and severity must still be proven. Missing this step can cost months of compensation. Always verify VA rating criteria directly in 38 CFR Part 4. Do not rely on summaries alone.
