Symptom vs Condition vs Diagnosis (What the VA Actually Uses)

Category:

Most veterans file claims based on symptoms. The VA does not rate symptoms. That’s where the problem starts. Here’s the difference: A symptom is what you feel. Pain. Headaches. Fatigue. A condition is a medically recognized issue causing those symptoms. Like migraines, degenerative disc disease, or PTSD. A diagnosis is the formal medical identification of that condition, made by a qualified provider and supported by clinical findings. The VA does not grant benefits for symptoms alone. Under 38 CFR Part 3, you need a current diagnosed condition to establish service connection.
