How the VA Rates Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) | What Most Veterans Miss
If you’ve been diagnosed with IBS and think the VA is rating your stomach pain, you’re already behind. Because the VA doesn’t rate IBS based on diagnosis, it rates how often your condition disrupts your life. And most veterans never document that correctly. When it comes to IBS, the VA looks at it as a functional condition. That means there’s often no clear structural damage on imaging or labs. Instead, the VA evaluates patterns. How often symptoms happen, how severe they are, and how they affect your ability to function day to day.
